JPG, PNG or WebP: which format should you use?

Choose an image format based on the content, transparency and the website or app receiving the file.

Choose an image format by what the picture contains and where the file will be used. A small file is useful only if the receiving app accepts it and the result still looks right. DeskKit offers JPEG, PNG and browser-supported WebP export.

Choose JPEG for compatible photo uploads

JPEG is a useful choice for photographs when the destination supports it. DeskKit lets you adjust JPEG quality and inspect the result. Lower quality can reduce detail, especially around text and sharp edges. JPEG also removes transparency: DeskKit places transparent areas on white before exporting them as JPEG.

Choose PNG when transparent pixels matter

If a logo must sit on different background colours, test PNG. It preserves a transparent background in DeskKit’s image workflow. A photograph saved as PNG may be much larger than a JPEG version. The PNG quality control is intentionally disabled because it does not offer the same lossy quality adjustment in this tool.

Try WebP when the destination supports it

WebP is another option for browser-compatible image workflows. Test the output with the service receiving your file. A form that explicitly asks for JPG or PNG may reject WebP regardless of how small it is. DeskKit reads the actual encoded output type when assigning the downloaded extension, because browser export support can vary.

A decision checklist

Changing the extension does not convert the image

Renaming photo.png to photo.jpg changes its name, not its encoding. A conversion tool must decode the source and create a new encoded file. Use DeskKit’s format selector, create the preview, and save the new result. Keep the extension that the exporter supplies.

Animation is a separate requirement

The current DeskKit canvas workflow exports a still image. Do not use it to preserve an animated greeting or moving sticker. Keep the original animation and choose an animation-aware editor for that job.
